Facebook

Facebook may be worth $10 billion, at least to Microsoft, says the Wall Street Journal. Someone leaked to them that the two companies are in discussions to take a Microsoft investment of $300-$500 million for 5% of the company.

Any cash they take in would be good for 2020 customers as our ad would reach more and more Facebook members.

Alibaba.com plans to raise U.S.$1 billion thru Hong Kong IPO

Monday, July 30th, 2007

jack ma of alibaba.com
Jack Ma, Founder and CEO of Alibaba.com, with former U.S. President Bill Clinton in Hangzhou, China.

Jack Ma, founder and CEO of Alibaba.com, has for the first time confirmed to Alibaba employees at the company’s annual meeting that Alibaba’s B2B business will initiate its IPO procedure in Hong Kong.

Ma said that Alibaba has already submitted an application to Hong Kong Joint Stock Exchange Market. For a long time there had been a rumor about Alibaba’s IPO plans, but all this had not been formally confirmed by Alibaba until July when Alibaba appointed consultants for its listing and hired Maggie Wu, a partner at KPMG, as senior vice president and chief financial officer of the B2B company.

Alibaba reportedly will raise about HK$7.8 billion through this IPO (about US$1 billion), and use the money for its global expansion and B2B platform improvements.

2020 Systems is an early member of the Alibaba trade community and has been helping  its global manufacturers market products online and to U.S. customers.  We are glad to see Alibaba makes it thru the upcoming IPO.

FaceBook’s First Acquisition: Parakey

Blake Ross

Photo above: Firefox and Parakey co-founder Blake Ross

Their first acquisition: Facebook has bought Parakey, the yet-to-launch “web operating system” created by Firefox co-founders Blake Ross and Joe Hewitt. The price isn’t being disclosed, but Facebook should be issuing a press release soon.

Back in Feb 2005, Doug Leone is the Sequoia partner who has spearheaded the investment in the two-person company which is yet to decide its name. Ross, has been one of the most talked about youngsters in Silicon Valley. The 19-year-old Stanford University student interned at Netscape at age 14, and was one of the many software whizkids who turned Netscape’s bloated and kludgy software into Mozilla’s Firefox. Ross is not revealing the ultimate plans for the company or the focus of its products at that moment (now we know it’s a web os). The funding information comes from highly placed Silicon Valley sources, but was never confirmed officially.

Parakey will be an extremely important asset to Facebook as they are trying to become a web os itself with a social networking twist. With their F8 program launched in May 2007, 1000’s of apps has already appeared on the Facebook platform.

Could Facebook kill Microsoft by having thousands of apps developed on its platform (vs the PC os “windows” in the 1990’s) Time will tell.

All we know is our 2020 CLASSIFIEDS customers will benefit greatly as more users/consumers flock to the facebook site.

Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang to replace Terry Semel as CEO - Sunnyvale, CA

Monday, June 18th, 2007

Terry Semel
Photo above: Yahoo CEO Terry Semel

In a surprising announcement today, Yahoo Inc. said Terry Semel will step aside as its chief executive and be replaced by co-founder Jerry Yang, as the Internet icon attempts to reinvigorate its business and regain investor confidence.

Wall Street likes the decision obviously. In after hours trading, the stock surged another 4.73%, to $29.45.

Mr. Semel, a former Hollywood executive who joined Yahoo in 2001, will remain chairman in a non-executive role. In a conference call, Mr. Semel acknowledged that investors were frustrated with the company’s recent performance, noting “none of us have been satisfied.”

The Sunnyvale, California, company also named Susan Decker as its new president. Ms. Decker, a former equity-research analyst who joined Yahoo in 2000 as chief financial officer, was recently named the head of the company’s advertising business. She will now oversee the company’s advertising, audience and publishing operations and said she plans to integrate these units.

It strikes me that the company didn’t quite feel ready to appoint Sue Decker, who was appointed president (effectively COO), as CEO despite widespread speculation that she was the heir apparent. Hence Jerry Yang taking the helm. Here is Jerry Yang’s post from yodel Anecdotal.

It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, the then 21 year old Harvard student while getting his undergraduate degree. Mark was famous for rejecting the Microsoft conference call because he “was still sleeping at 8:30a.m. in the morning”, and has reportedly turned down offers from both Yahoo and Microsoft for buying his company for $1 Billion last year. (His investors wants $8 Billion)

It is now the nation’s sixth most-visited-website, according to the tracking firm ComScore.

AdBrite is backed by Sequoia Capital, who was the original investor for Google, Yahoo, Apple, YouTube, and many others. Too bad he couldn’t stay long with Adbrite as he got to go back to HK for personal reasons. Well, I hope all is well with you and will see you back in U.S. soon.

Tons of fun in ad:tech SF yesterday

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Meet up with Google, Microsoft, IAC, AT&T’s Yellowpages.com, and Verizon’s Superpages.com yesterday who are heavyweights in their respective online advertising space. After talking to the insiders and various product management teams, our views held consistent with our earlier predictions that each is trying to strike out a niche from their respective space. Although they are trying to make online advertising easier, it still has a long way to go for the avg small business person to understand the fundamentals.

On the start-up space, got to know some pretty interesting companies and their products. Bumped into a bunch of old friends who are either founders or co-founders of some of the more innovative start-ups. Overall, everyone seems to be having tons of fun and enjoying the show.
